AFRICA AID

Unlike in the United States, doctors in Ghana and Liberia might be hundreds of miles away from the nearest specialist. By providing free phone calls between physicians and a doctor directory service to help them find each other, Africa Aid believes MDNet can significantly increase the efficacy of medicine in Africa and help save lives.

STRATEGY & DESIGN

We designed a print doctor directory and distribution model that leverages Africa Aid’s strategic African partners, and we’re currently refining a novel text message-based doctor directory service concept that aligns with Africa Aid’s operational and aspirational goals.

The impact of this project, however, has turned out to be greater than just designing for underserved needs of doctors in Africa; we’re informing necessary organizational change that will be critical to the long-term success of Africa Aid.

RESEARCH

We conducted human-centered design research and service usability studies in Ghana, including interviews and observations in medical settings ranging from metropolitan teaching hospitals to remote rural clinics with only one doctor.

We identified many opportunities to improve the user experience of MDNet's existing services and revealed underserved needs with regard to consultations and patient referrals. Through analogous situations, we revealed important values to preserve in our designs. For example, doctors take pride in expanding their personal networks; this happens through shared experiences, starting with medical school and continuing to grow through shared patients, events, and other encounters.
