Surgical procedures are becoming increasingly complex and medical decision-making is critical for successful outcomes. Telecommunications technology has made it possible for medical professionals to consult between operating rooms and across hospitals, ensuring doctors practice safer medicine and minimize risk of difficult procedures.

STRATEGY & DESIGN

We designed a telecommunications and procedural knowledge management tool for surgeons consulting and mentoring between operating rooms and across hospitals. Our solution was benchmarked against existing telecommunication products and services using heuristics that were derived from our research insights and design implications.

We iteratively prototyped the interactions and interfaces, conducted participatory design sessions with medical professionals to test prototypes and cultivate relationships and evangelism, and developed communication materials including a videosketch demonstrating functionality and value to support our client’s pitch for funding.

RESEARCH

We conducted internal interviews to build a shared understanding of the problem space and our clients’ varied interests. These initial insights helped guide our human-centered design research, which included interviews and observations in surgical settings alongside practitioners across services and with varying levels of expertise.

We uncovered insights that helped us design for the surgeon as manager, mindful of resources, time, and flow of procedures; surgeon as master, cultivating ones own technical skill and ability to collaborate with the team; and surgeon as mentor, mindful of transferring knowledge and providing support.
