GE HEALTHCARE + UPMC

Current digital systems for pathology have not been fully integrated into the diagnostic workflow of pathologists due to usability issues, inadequate image resolutions and the slow speed of scanning slides. Omnyx has developed technology capable of scanning slides at high resolutions and high speeds. We were tasked with designing a complete digital pathology solution to view these digital images and integrate this viewer into the workflow of pathologists.

STRATEGY & DESIGN

We designed and developed a patented digital pathology workflow and image navigation system. Our solution was benchmarked against existing digital pathology products using heuristics that were derived from our research insights and design implications.

RESEARCH

We organized an integration workshop with our client and other key stakeholders to build a shared understanding of the territory and guide initial research. Our human-centered design research included contextual inquiries and observations alongside pathologists at several different institutions and with varying levels of expertise. We also benchmarked existing digital pathology solutions using heuristics that were derived from our research insights and design implications.

ABOUT GE HEALTHCARE + UPMC

GE Healthcare and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) jointly formed Omnyx with the goal of delivering digital pathology solutions for diagnostic medicine. Omnyx sponsored an eight-month HCI capstone project at Carnegie Mellon in 2008.
