Hi, my name is Steve. I'm a designer.
These are my client projects.

INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS

Planned and conducted human-centered design research & problem/opportunity-finding; contributed to concept creation, information architecture, interaction & interface design, the emotional piece (videosketch), and the strategic framework, revenue model, and branding.

MICROSOFT + MOTOROLA

Microsoft & Motorola asked the question: how will rich media, connectivity, and high bandwidth enable new kinds of learning environments and content to be produced, shared, and found by anyone anywhere?

STRATEGY & DESIGN

We designed indigo, a contextually-aware mobile system that promotes active learning by connecting people with activities through their social network. By exposing new opportunities through the lens of people you know, indigo lowers the barrier to active learning and encourages participation in the real world. Users can find activities happening around them based on their specific learning interests and involving people in their social network.

We also developed a revenue model and basic framework for the strategic partnerships between Microsoft, Motorola, and the network carriers, all of whom would need to contribute in order to effectively provide the product and service.

RESEARCH

We conducted human-centered design research including interviews, observations, and participatory methods. Our insights helped define the opportunity: people have diverse interests and want to learn from other people, whom they trust, by actively participating. This led us to focus on active learning — through reflection in action.

We defined four core values to design for: communication, to easily contact, coordinate, and share with each other; awareness, to know what is going on near you and in your social network; choice, to be able to opt in based on your interests, schedule, location, and social network; and participation, to learn with each other in the real world.

ABOUT MICROSOFT + MOTOROLA

In 2008, Microsoft and Motorola co-sponsored a graduate design course at Carnegie Mellon's School of Design. The project was framed in part by Microsoft’s Global Design Expo challenge and Motorola’s interest in exploring the potential of contextual awareness in mobile devices.
